3D vision at the heart of the Industry of tomorrow

The industry is evolving and adapting its manufacturing processes to innovations and new solutions that meet their needs. Generally, the first need is the roboticization of production lines to ensure consistent production and equal quality of the products manufactured. One of the vision’s goals is to make robotic applications smarter. The first step in an industrial vision application, whether it is a simple assembly check or a robotic bulk and 3D object recognition system of the most complex, is to locate the object or verify the characteristic of a room in the camera’s field of view. The precise location of the product is a key element in determining whether the project is feasible or not. The software tools associated with the vision sensor must precisely locate the part in the image, so that the vision system can guide, identify, inspect, count or measure the part. Although this sounds simple enough, locating parts in a real production environment can be extremely difficult due to variations in the hue or color of the parts and/or variations in brightness inside the plant, as well as variations in the size and shape of raw parts.

Across all industries, the need for locating parts in a container or moving on a conveyor belt or on a fixture is fundamental.

Indeed, once the part is located by a vision system, the robot can then pick the part to make it evolve in its production cycle: machining tool feed, robotic guidance for precision operations – deburring, drilling … Or robotic guidance for assembly lines – windshield installation, wheel installation on a vehicle body …
